Chandigarh,also called City Beautiful, is a city in India that serves as the capital of two states, Punjab and Haryana, and is a union territory of India. The name translates from Hindi to English as "the fort of Chandi", Chandi being a Hindu Goddess.

Known internationally for its architecture and urban planning, Chandigarh is home to numerous architectural projects of Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Matthew Nowicki, and Albert Mayer. The city boasts a high standard of living with the highest per capita income in the country and tops the list of Indian States and Union Territories with a Human Development Index of 0.674.


On 15 July 2007, Chandigarh became the first Indian city to go smoke-free[citation needed]. Smoking at public places has been strictly prohibited and considerd as a punishable act by Chandigarh Administration.

Chandigarh Amb Sahib Gurdwara is a prominent pilgrimage spot. It is located in Phase 7 in the Mohali district. It is said that in 1659, Guru Har Rai, the seventh Guru of Sikhs visited this place to meet his disciple, Bhai Kooram. Bhakra Nanagal Dam
Bhakra Nanagal Dam - World's Highest straight Gravity Dam
Located at a distance of about 116 kms from Chandigarh, Bhakra Nangal dam is the world's highest straight gravity dam, constructed across the River Satluj. The hydroelectric station positioned here not just generates power for Chandigarh, but also for Delhi and other cities. The construction work of Bhakra Nangal dam began in 1948 and got completed in 1963. Named after India's former President, Zakir Hussain, this beautiful garden was set up in 1967 with the support of Chandigarh's first Chief Commissioner, late Dr M S Randhawa. Chandigarh rose garden contains more than 17,000 plants. There are nearly 1,600 varieties of roses over there. It is a spacious garden covering an area of 27 acres. Dr. Zakir rose garden not just consists of the gorgeous roses, but also trees of medicinal value. Some of the medicinal plants that can be spotted here are bel, bahera, harar, camphor and yellow gulmohar. Rose garden serves as the venue for hosting the annual festival of gardens, a major cultural event of the city.

Smiriti Upavan of Chandigarh, India is a beautiful garden filled with trees. It is located between Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake in Sector 1. This garden was set up in 1988 with the view of planting trees for the departed souls. The term Smriti means 'remembrance' and Upavan means 'forest'. In the Chandigarh Smriti Upavan, the first banyan tree was planted by the then adviser Mr. Ashok Pradhan, in the memory of our first prime minister, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru. Sukhana Lake
Sukhana Lake - Artificial Lake
Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh, India is an artificial lake at the foothills of the Shivalik hills. This 3 km² rainfed lake was created in 1958 by damming the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream coming down from the Shivalik Hills. Originally the seasonal flow entered the lake directly causing heavy siltation. To check the inflow of silt, 25.42 km² of land was acquired in the catchment area and put under vegetation. In 1974, the Choe was diverted and made to bypass the lake completely, the lake being fed by three siltation pots, minimising the entry of silt into the lake itself.
