Gandhi Museum - Memorial of Gandhiji
Gandhi museum was the official residence of the District collectors of madurai for many years. This museum is a great historic tamukkam palace of Rani Mangammal during 1670. The importance of this museum is that in 1955, the palace and the land of 12 acres were dedicated to Gandhi samak Nidhi by the Government of TamilNadu in remembrance of the life and work of Father of our Nation. Gandhi Memorial Museum has a remarkable collection of Gandhiji's paintings, Sculptures, Gandhian Quotations, articles of village industries and Khadi Crafts. The collection of varities of gandhiyan thoughts are been portrayed as paintings in this museum. The Handicrafts and the articals used by Gandhi are been preserved here.
Koodal Azhar Kovil
Koodal Azhar Kovil - Lord Vishnu Temple
Koodal Azhagar Koil is one of the 108 Divyadesams of the Vaishnavites, the idols of Vishnu and Lakshmi are huge and beautiful. The temple is beautifully situated near madurai. The gopuram here is fully inspired with lots of Gods. Lord Vishnu is very powerful to wash away the sins and to offer blessings to the devotees. During festival times like "purataasy sani" special poojas and offerings are been done. Poets used to meet here and sing the praise of the Lord, hence the name. The temple finds mention in Sangam literature dating back to 2000 years. The tower consists of 3 tiers depicting Vishnu in 3 posture, sitting, standing and reclining. The shadow of the vimanam never falls on the ground. It is one of the few temples in the country built in tiers.
Mariamman Watertank
Mariamman Watertank - Theppakulam
The Mariamman Theppakulam is a huge tank which is 1000 feet long and 950 feet wide. In the center of this tank there is a mandapam cum Lord vigneshwara temple. During festival season, this tank is filled with water and decorated with lights . This float festival is celebrated here on the Full moon day in the midst of january and febrary The tank turns colourful, which attracts the eyes of the visitors
Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple
Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple - Sri Meenakshi Temple
This is a twin temple. The temple in the southern side is dedicated to Sri Meenakshi the consort of lord Sundareswarar (Shiva) and the other to lord Sundareswarar. This is one of the biggest temple complexes of India. The temple is about 258 meters in length and about 241.4 meters in breadth. Of the five Gopuras (towers) that surround the 48.8 meters high southern tower is the tallest. Madurai Meenakshiamman kovil was built by Kulasekara Pandya, but the entire credit for making the temple as splendid as it is today goes to the Nayaks.
Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal

Thirumalai Nayakar palace is one of the important palace which was built by Thirumalai Nayaakar in 1636. The paintings, carvings and designing of the mahal shows the amazing talents of the nayak kings. This Mahal is situated 2kms south east of Meenakshi Amman Temple. A classic example of the Indo-saracenic style, the piece de resistance of this mahal is its carved dome outsoars without the support of girders or rafters. This mahal has 248 pillars of each 58 feet tall and 5 feet in diameter. The gigantic pillars and paintings of the events that took place before, the ethics impress ourselves and takes us to the 16th century. There is a dancing hall and a courtyard at the center of the mahal. The stucco work on its domes and arches is remarkable. Now this mahal is used for cinema shooting.
Tiruparankundram - Lord Murugan Temple
Tirupparankundram is located 5 miles southwest madurai.This is the place where lord Muruga and Devayanai, daughter of Indra married. This temple is a hill temple with a gorgeous look. Tirupparankunram is also mentioned in legend as 'the place where the sun and moon abide'. It is regarded as the sacred temple for marriages. People believe that marriages done here are succesfull due to the blessings of lord Muruga. The temple is surrounded with many trees and green lands. Tirupparankundram is one of the Aru Padai Vedugal of lord subramaniyam.
